A History of Dueling by a French Novelist.

Le vray et ancien vsage des dvels.

First edition of poet-adventurer Vital d'Audiguier's thoughtful work on the history, laws, and ethics of dueling in France. D'Audiguier is best known today for his chivalrous swashbuckler, Histoire trage-comique de nostre temps [Paris: du Bray, 1615], but according to critic Gustave Reynier, d'Audiguier's own life was far more compelling, adventurous, and tragic than any of his fiction. Having known to have fought in no fewer than 17 duels by age seventeen, and continuing to duel throughout his life for minor honors and to avenge passing slights, one might expect to learn that his days ended in a duel, but in fact d'Audiguier died in an ordinary brawl over a gambling debt at the country estate of a female companion at age 55. D'Audigier's work on dueling, composed in 42 chapters (many of which are expanded versions of earlier essays, both published and unpublished), outlines the history of dueling in France, argues for the necessity of dueling (but admits to the need for regulation), and, with a novelist's flair for narrative, recounts many famous duels, some of which were contests contemporary to Henry IV's reign. Though d'Audiguier does not frequently cite sources, he was clearly well read in both popular histories and the more obscure French and Spanish accounts of duels, and moreover had a strong grasp of the ethics and legality of dueling, even if he did not adhere to them himself. Pierre Bayle thought highly of the book, and noted its rarity. Three copies located in American institutional libraries (Tulane, the Sporting Library, and the Met).
