A Personal Account of Winemaking and Wine Preservation In Italy

Del modo di conservare i vini.

First Edition. An anonymous letter from an Italian oenophile to a friend, an anonymous Bergamo farmer-nobleman, on the best method for preserving wines. The author, who begins their letter with the salutation Amico, first compliments his or her friend on their agricultural skills, then continues with a lengthy discussion of the author's secrets for the preservation of wine. The author considers everything from temperature, humidity, and exposure to air, and even the formulation of corks and the re-bottling of older wines. The author discusses their methods for the harvesting of wine grapes, their secrets for economical fermentation, and the general prinicples of the fermentation process. Our copy has a few paste-over manuscript corrections, perhaps by the author, who has succesfully endeavored to reproduce the typography. A most unusual and highly personal snapshot of late-settocento winemaking in the Bergamo region. A fine exemplar, bound in Remondini block-printed floral wraps. Not found in the usual wine bibliographies. One copy located, in an Italian university library.
