A Collection of 54 Eighteenth-Century Mexican Misas, Spanning Almost the Entire Career of Printer José Bernardo de Hogal.

54 Misas printed in Mexico City by José Bernardo de Hogal between 1724 and 1741.

Fascinating Sammelband of 54 misas, most (if not all) printed between 1724 and 1741 by José Bernardo de Hogal, the so-called "Ibarra of Mexico," a pioneering printer responsible for revitalizing the declining art and industry of printing in Mexico City at the end of the first quarter of the 18th century. Educated at Seville, Hogal moved to Mexico City in 1720 as an officer of the Royal Treasury of the Viceroyalty in charge of allocating funding for the army. By 1721, Hogal's attention had been adverted to the declining health of the printing industry in his new city. He decided to do something about it, and attempted to launch a printing venture in the newly dug suburban thoroughfare of Calle Monterilla. But he was unable to secure official permission, and, after much frustration, decided in 1722 to return to Spain to secure both a royal privilege and supplies, including paper, inks, matrices, dismantled presses, and founts of type, as well as skilled workers. In 1724, on a ship burthen with supplies, Hogal journeyed back to Mexico City with his wife, children, four sisters, a brace of typesetters, and a privilege to print, and inaugurated the Nueva Imprenta in his own name. In 1727, after three years of accelerating success and recognition, Hogal was crowned Mayor Printer of Mexico City. Most, if not all, of the 54 misas in our Sammelband were produced by the job-printing branch of Hogal's enterprise between 1724 and his death in 1741. Most are known in single institutional exemplars, held in the Medina Collection at the Chilean National Library in Santiago; only a very few examples are held outside of Chile and Mexico. The collection, which is ordered chronologically from January to December (with two extra masses for feasts in May and June), has characteristics in common with both missals and breviaries, and was likely assembled by (or for) a pious reader who chose his or her selections from remaindered Hogal stock. The tracts may have been bound up in Hogal's shop, which, after his death, was run by his widow—who expanded the printing concern, and became one of the most important of all Mexican women printers—and who certainly would have wanted to make use of her husband's unsold sheets. The collection is preserved in its original binding, and contains masses for both Old World and New World saints, including St. Rose and St. Toribio of Lima. Our volume is prefixed with a two-page list of contents in contemporary manuscript, and on the lower pastedown is a kind of wish list, perhaps penned by the original owner, of masses they wished to read or later acquire. A remarkable survival as an object of private devotion, and a unique witness to ephemeral printing spanning nearly the entire career of one of Mexico City's most prolific and enduring printers.

All works in octavo, 152 x 106 x 42 mm (binding), 150 x 105 x 39 mm (text block). Contemporary Mexican sheepskin after 1741, unlettered, boards decorated with gilt borders; several silk bookmarks, including a fragment of pink silk preserved before the mass of St. Cunegunda. Covers worn but intact; hinges separating, exposing sewing. We note with interest the hodgepodge of sewing techniques used to assemble the text block, which was partially sewn on two raised supports with a combination of all-along stitches, two-on stitches, and stab-stitching, along with single-core headbanding. Evidence in the exposed hinges suggest the cover at one point came off, the supports  perhaps having broken, and the text block recased in the original covers. Interior: Paginated in early manuscript 13-342 (21-30 wanting, and 160-169 skipped without loss). According to the manuscript contents pages and the pagination, five leaves are wanting after the third misa (pagination 21-30); these comprise the feast of St. Idlefonso (two leaves); St. Ludovico (two leaves), and the first leaf of the feast of St. Paul. In addition, single leaves are likely wanting from #s 11, 19, 23, and 51, though these may have never been bound in. A use-copy, with damp-staining in gutter margin (perhaps from the migration of glue used to recase the text block) through part of the volume; scattered soiling; marginal tears and few leaves partially detached, but on the whole well preserved.
